“And here we…go!” The Dark Knight on DVD & Blu-Ray

After watching The Dark Knight on DVD last night I realized how much I now need a Blu-Ray player.  Alas, I’m currently stuck watching movies on my old Sony DVD player @ 480i.  Fortunately, this pang of longing subsided rather quickly.

You know that tinge of fear you might get right before you sit down to a movie you loved in the theater and have been anticipating for months?  It’s the fear that, maybe, just maybe it won’t be as good as you thought it was or the same thrill can’t be retained in watching it over again?  It’s only the iconic, legendary, classic films like the Godfather or Star Wars that just never seem dilluted by repeat viewings.  Well, I think maybe The Dark Knight might be one of those films.  Now, before you get all up in my proverbial grill, remember, I said “maybe” and I say “maybe” because when viewing the Dark Knight last night (that makes 5 viewings now, I think) it doesn’t lose an ounce of it’s perceived brilliance. The New Star Trek Trailer Came Out! Meh.

I realize I am beginning to repeat myself here.  I’ve simultaneously realized I don’t care.  Moving on.  The new Star Trek trailer debuted in front of Quantum of Solace this weekend (and on Youtube soon after).  You know the great thing about having a cinematic doppleganger (mine is stridex and I am his) is that he can send you an e-mail asking only, “Have you watched ‘it’?” and I know exactly what “it” is without being told.  We are linked you see.  If it weren’t for his significant vertical advantage I’d swear we were separated at birth.  Nevertheless, his dread called out to me upon viewing the new trailer for J.J. Abram’s Star Trek like a long lost twin in danger. Continue reading ‘The New Star Trek Trailer Came Out! Meh.’

Actually, I kinda like him when he’s angry

I think, structurally, Quantum of Solace has the opposite effect that Casino Royale did, but in the best way possible.  What I mean is this; Casino Royale was a unique 007 film that dragged into a fourth act.  It’s not a lesser movie for this fact, and in spite of how well the fourth act of Casino Royale is shot and paced, it’s still a fourth act.

I felt the same way about the first significant portion of Quantum.  It’s a Bond film, you like it and  it’s even a little unique in parts, but it doesn’t really blow your hair back.  You feel your commitment level starting to dwindle, you know?  There are moments wherein I pondered, “Does the guy who directed Stranger Than Fiction have an action director’s bone anywhere in his body? Continue reading ‘Actually, I kinda like him when he’s angry’

Five Shameless Sequels I’d See

Hollywood will always be crazy about sequels.  So why not muse on what I would unapologetically fork over 8 dollars to see?  On an amusing side note, all but one of the movies on my list has been in the sequel rumor mill at one time or another.  Movie fantasies, go!

Top Gun.  That’s right. Top “damn” Gun with Tom “effin” Cruise.  It would rock.  It would be so balsy it might not even call itself Top Gun.  It could be called something obscure but appropriate, like Fightertown, USA, as if to say, “go ahead, sucker, just try and figure me out.  Am I a sequel to Top Gun, or do I just want to look like a sequel to Top Gun?  I guess you’ll just have to buy a ticket to find out!  OOOOH, you just bought a ticket to Top Gun 2, asshole! Enjoy the ride!” Continue reading ‘Five Shameless Sequels I’d See’

Fallout 3: Oblivion Re-Dux?

I have played about 10 - 15 hours of Fallout 3 over the last week. Don’t ask me where I got it already, you should know the answer to that question.

Now, I haven’t played the game nearly enough to even begin to give a full-fledged review (I’ve barely begun to scratch the surface of the single-player plot), but I wanted to spend some time and comment on something that I think hasn’t gotten nearly enough traction on other gaming sites: just how similar Fallout 3 and Oblivion feel. Can I get a “What the Hell?!” up in here?

I don’t want this to be one of those whiny, bedside blogger, can’t get a job cause I’m too comfortable under my Ewok bedsheets, sort of rants that reveals what a huge freakin’ nerd I am but, holy crap, does something need to be said here or what?

In case you didn’t know, there’s a new Star Trek movie on Paramount Studio’s front burner.  J.J. Abrams, who brought us the sometimes great, usually “meh” Alias, as well as the action perfection that is Mission Impossible III is the man at the helm, or the captain’s chair, or…hell with it, he’s the guy with enough (potentially fatal) stones to recast and restart the original Star Trek franchise.

The Lowest Form of Humor

I’ve recently decided that there are three definitive bottom rungs on the humor ladder.

1. Puns – “Seriously Mom, the more people get it, the less funny it is. I promise.”

2. Mimes – “Do I even need to justify this one?”

And then there’s the one that got this blog roll a rollin’.

3. Parodies.  Yes parodies! Don’t give me that, “what about Mel Brooks” stuff.  He’s the exception and will probably be the only one.  David Zucker gets a pass but just for Airplane! and The Naked Gun, and only then because Leslie Nielsen reminds me of an irresistible amalgamation of Dick Van Dyke and my Grandpa.

Hate the Movie. Like the Soundtrack. Hypocrite? Probably.

The great thing about music is not always that the melody is catchy, the singer is skilled, or that a particular instrument is well played.  Many times, the thing that makes a song great can be completely subjective.  Critics may hate it.  Your parents may hate it.  Your friends may hate it too.  And they might all technically be right but, darn it all if every time you hear Bryan Adams’ sing “Everything I do, I do it for you” you get all misty cause the first time you held a girl’s hand was in Robin Prince of Thieves and his ballad was the bookend to the touch that activated your adolescent imagination.  That’s just a generic example by the way.  I hate that song.  Really. Why You Should Try Speed.

Welcome to the inaugural post of what will be my regular contribution to the site. I will admit up front that I am actually quite lazy and the regularity of this column may one day turn to irregularity. I will now pause as I reflect on how much that last sentence sounds like a Metamucil commercial.

Ok, moving on. I have very few perks when it comes to movies these days. Once upon a time I suffered beneath a vest and bow tie to see free movies in the theater and eat all the popcorn I could handle. I’ve always envied the professional critic who not only gets paid to watch movies but also gets paid to watch them waaaaay before I do. I will pause yet again to shake my fist at the sky for such an injustice. These days I manage a video store part time and have access to most DVDs a few days before they hit shelves on each highly anticipated New Release Tuesday. This is the singular, although minor advantage. The down side is the frequency of this conversation,

Customer: “Do you have this [customer holds up something featuring Larry the Cable Guy] in full screen?

Angry Me: “No.”

Disappointed Customer: “Oh. I like the full screen.”

Condescending Me: “You know wide screen preserves the original theatrical image right?”

Customer in natural state: “Huh?”

Me doing my best impression of customer: “Um…you see the whole picture with the widescreen.”

Customer: “Isn’t widescreen the one where it cuts the top off the scre…”

Me: “No. No it’s not. Here’s a chart.”

At this point I hand the customer a chart that demonstrates not only their ignorance but also the glory of the widescreen format.

Now, since I’m not the type to dwell too long on the negative, I thought I would use the small advantage (whew – almost typed “small perk” there – close one) I have to send the occasional DVD review your way. I’m calling it “Why Tuesday is the Best Day of All the Days” (unless, I think of something cool). Here’s the first one…

Terminating

I enjoy the Terminator movies.  They aren’t my passion, by any means, but I understand that they are assuredly on the “good” side of what we can do with an original premise in motion pictures.  In recent years there has been a strong push to screw with the canon of the original two films, and I suppose that it hasn’t been all bad.  Terminator 3 was a positive experience that warranted two outings to the theater, but I wouldn’t place it nearly in the same category as the first two pictures.

Last year’s announcement that they were making two new properties, a movie and a series, that both did everything in their power to play “what if” with the previously established constraints of the franchise was a baffling move, one that may only be matched if rumors on the upcoming ill-conceived Star Trek motion picture serve to be true.  Seeing as the Christian Bale helmed… prequel / sequel / whatever the hell you want to call it isn’t due for a while yet, I have no statement on it as long as the leaked ending is nowhere near the truth of the matter.  The ongoing FOX series is another matter entirely.
